A Case of Anencephalic Fetus Prenatally Detected By Maternal Serum Alpha-Fetoprotein (MSAFP)




Abstract
Matenal Serum Alpha-fetoprotein screening is one of the most efficient way of detecting various congenital abnormalities of the fetus, such as open neural tube defects, renal anomalies, esophageal or intestinal obstructions, and so on. Among these, open neural tube defects, such as anencephaly and open spina bifida are supposed to be the most sensitive for this screening.
Maternal Serum Alpha-Fetoprotein of 111 pregnant women with gestation 17 through 22 weeks were screened during 21 months from January 1989, to September 1990. at Chung-Ang University Hospital.
This reported case is the first to be diagnosed as anencephalic pregnancy by measurement of Alpha -Fetoprotein (AFP) in maternal serum at 19 weeks. in our Hospital. So, we presented this case and reviewed the concerned literatures.
